Gestational Diabetes: A Condition to be Taken Seriously
When you realize that you are pregnant, you already have enough things to worry about. But if you are diagnosed with gestational diabetes, please pay close attention. This condition is serious, but it is not a completely hopeless situation. If you get regular check-ups, eat a healthy diet, get regular exericise, and seek proper treatment, it is likely that you will be able to make it through your pregnancy despite having gestational diabetes. The most important thing to remember is that you MUST see your doctor or obstetrician to get tested for this condition as soon as you know that you’re pregnant.
Are You At Risk?
In theory, any woman that is pregnant can get gestational diabetes, however; there are some women that can be at a higher risk than others. If you are older than 25, you’re pretty much at risk. If there has been a woman in your immediate family that had gestational diabetes, then you are at risk. If you are overwieght, then you are at risk. If you happen to be of Native American, African American, Asian, or Spanish origin, you are more likely to get it. But keep in mind that you don’t have to be diabetic in order to develop gestational diabetes.
Common Treatments
Gestational diabetes is not a condition in which you can just take your medication and hope it does the trick. It is important to deal with the condition through multiple types of treatment. Obviously, take any of the medication that is prescribed to you. Some of the medications can include blood sugar injections or a pill that’s made out of glyburide. It is also vital for you to monitor your blood sugar levels several times thoughout the day just like anyone else who is diabetic.
If you have been diagnosed with gestational diabetes, food can have an entirely different meaning. When deciding on what and when to eat, you must take into consideration how it will affect your blood sugar levels. The timing of your meals is more important and you must try to eat several smaller meals throughout your day. High fat, high calorie foods are a big no-no and you should avoid them if at all possible.
Exercise is also something you should be doing regularly. Now this may become a problem if you have a complicated pregnancy and you are bed-ridden throughout it. But even if that’s the case, you can still perform certain stretches in bed. Make sure that you consult with your doctor or obstetrician before starting any type of exercise program.
If you have a normal pregnancy with the exception of having gestational diabetes, your excercise options are greatly increased. Walking is always a great option as well as things such as gardening, housework, or swimming. They even have yoga exercises designed specifically for pregnant women! One of the other great side benefits to excercise is that it can reduce the constipation and cramps normally associated with pregnancy.
